Ms. Green requested that PENCIL couple her with a business partner who could create a new identity for her school, and Kara responded to that request. Together, they garnered a wide variety of media coverage , developed a new school logo and social marketing platform. The platform includes this blog and twitter, and will increase communication between teachers, parents and students, as well as businesses, elected officials and other members of the local community.

PENCIL, the nonprofit organization that develops innovative solutions to the challenges confronting public schools by creating partnerships between business leaders and principals, today held its 2008-2009 Year-end Partnership Celebration. Sponsored by long-time supporter JPMorgan Chase, the event marked the accomplishments of more than 450 PENCIL Partnerships during the school year, and honored several standout partners with three inaugural awards for “Emerging,” “Innovative,” and “Veteran” PENCIL Partnerships.

The 2008-2009 Innovative Partnership of the Year Award was given to Principal Christopher Ogno of PS 247, The New York City College Partnership Elementary School in Brooklyn and Partner Ivy Cohen, President of Ivy Cohen Corporate Communications.

The 2008-09 Veteran Partnership Award was given to Principal Rima Ritholtz of PS 176X in the Bronx and Justin Israel of Channel 13 WNET/21 WLIW. With a student body of more than 570 autistic pre-K to 12th graders, PS 176X in the Bronx called upon the veteran experience of PENCIL Partners Rima Ritholtz, Principal of PS176X and business partner Justin Israel, Senior Patron Advisor at Channel 13 WNET/21, to develop programs that would offer critical support to the students’ parents.

Congratulations to my fellow Principals and their PENCIL Partners for their achievements this year and our commitment to the children of New York City!

Locke Elementary School – PS 208, hosted a press conference announcing the school’s Environmental Club’s activities during Earth Week and its newly branded, interactive online platform.

On Thursday, April 23rd, we celebrated Earth Week 2009  with an on-site visit from the Harlem River Ecology Center, , hosted by the center’s founder, Luger Balan.  Our students experienced two of the center’s exciting environmental education programs. In the auditorium, “Urban Wings Over Water”, where students and teachers will be introduced to various birds of our urban wetlands and watershed, including birds of prey.

In the gymnasium, “ Living Dinosaurs of the Urban Estuary”.  Both programs offer a colorful presentation, with audience participation with fun and hands-on environmental investigation and discovery activities. In the morning at its press conference, the school will also unveil a new logo and social marketing platform to help establish  a unique identity for Alain L. Locke P.S 208.

The creation of the school’s environmental club, as well as its new branding and social marketing platform, is a result of the school’s PENCIL Partnership with Kara Smith of Karasma Media PR .  Leibowitz Communications,  donated their company’s expertise to design the school’s logo and this website.   Leibowitz’ Maxine Gurevich and designer Nehal Beltangady explained their creative process to students.

Locke – P.S. 208 launched Harlem’s first elementary school environmental club.

With the help of an exceptional young “green-preneur” who traveled all the way from Little Rock, Arkansas with a passionate “go green” message .  The message was all the more inspiring because the young lady delivering it was not much older than our students.

Twelve-year old Riley Hoffer is the Founder of CG Kidz, a program devoted to fostering green living practices among kids. The program was created as part of the community outreach of eco-friendly bottle maker CynerGreen.com.

Our own Ms. Christina Adebiyi was presented with Environmental Club in a Box, consisting of mentoring and curriculum materials, by Riley's mom, Danelle Hoffer.

Riley shared her eco-friendly principle of the 3 Rs with us: "Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle." Riley also demonstrated that going green can be fun as she taught our students how to craft their own Christmas ornaments and decorations using recycled materials.

By the end of the day, we were not only able to share environmentally-friendly tips with our families at home, with tips like taking briefer showers and avoiding keeping the refrigerator door open for too long. We were were also able to see firsthand the impact that children can have in helping to save the planet.

Aside from our 6th-grade guest of honor and keynote speaker, on hand to mark the event was Evette Zayas, Chief of Staff to New York State Assemblyman Adam Clayton Powell, IV.

A partnership with Maryland’s first certified eco-friendly elementary school, Gibson Island Country School in Pasadena, Maryland, was also established  for mentoring and curriculum materials.

Our own Ms. Christina Adebiyi was presented with Environmental Club in a Box, consisting of mentoring and curriculum materials, by Riley's mom, Danelle Hoffer.

This is the curriculum that set the pace for the events our club participated in during the 2008 — 2009 school year. In addition to taking away the literal earth-changing message of environmental responsibility, each student left Wednesday’s presentation with a “green gift” of a BPA-free stainless steel CG Kidz reusable water bottle.
