The Locke Lions played their last game this past Friday.  In a 28-22 win, the Lions beat the Jaguars from PS 134.  Locke Lion Jamel attributes the team’s success to their confidence and belief that they could win.  The next basketball game for the Locke Lions will be held after Spring Recess!

1st Annual Cultural Field Day

this Wednesday, June 24th. 

The day will be filled with games, activities, face painting and cultural diversity. Students and staff will be wearing clothes and sharing foods that celebrate their cultural backgrounds.

The Lions Basketball team will face the A.L.L. Staff for a second game this year at 1:45pm in the schoolyard (weather permitting). Go Staff !… I mean, Go Lions!

Sitting there in the bleechers, Principal Green, AP Ms. Colón, and a group of teachers, parents and classmates, were all very proud of the way our boys hung in there until the final buzzer in a heartpounding one point game.

Unfortunately, the other team was able to edge us out in the closing seconds.

Final score: PS 83 – 24, PS 208 – 23

The boys worked extraordinarily hard, but we have to hand it to PS 83 for putting up a valiant effort and hanging in there with us the whole game.  Ultimately making their final push at the very end of the second half.

As for our own Locke’s Lions, we will have a focused off-season and come back next year knowing exaclty what our goal is, the championship trophy for the Harlem JV Basketball League!

After running several weekend basketball clinics at Alain L. Locke Elementary School – P.S. 208, Coach Greer Love established a great relationship with Ms. Green and Ms. Colon. He approached them with a proposal that would introduce a dual-focused academic and athletic program for kids who had an interest in basketball, modeled after his experience as a tutor for the Indiana University student-athlete services department. The team was selected from over 45 students who tried out this past October.

On days when practic was scheduled, Coach Love assisted as a student teacher in some of the afternoon classes.  This helped emphasize the academic component of the program and to give him broader exposure to students who were not on the team. After school, the team heads straight to the cafeteria for mandatory study tables prior to basketball practice. Participants in Locke’s Lions are required to work on homework under Coach Love’s tutelage. If students do not have homework or are finished, they are expected to read a book and write down five unfamiliar words in order to improve their vocabulary. After an hour of study tables, basketball practice commences.

Before competing locally, the team took on the teachers of Alain L. Locke Elementary. The whole school was invited to attend this enormously popular spirit assembly. Not only did these assemblies energize the student body with school spirit and promote further recognition of the program, but they also helped forge more respectful relationships between teachers and students. The teachers showed that experience still trumps youth by winning 26 to 24 in a closely contested game.

Along with seven other area coaches, teachers, and school administrators, Coach Love co-founded a local Harlem league for interscholastic competition.
