The regular season recently ended with the Lions finishing with an 11-1 record, good enough to clinch a first round bye in the playoffs.

Alain L. Locke -P.S. 208 team’s greatest test came in the final game of the regular season, when the previously undefeated Lions walked into P.S 83’s gym, complacently expecting to cruise to a 12-0 season. For the first time, the team had to deal with the concept of losing but it was the best thing that has happened to them. It served as a serious wake-up call: team members momentarily forgot that everything achieved to date had been earned, not simply granted.

With our cheerleaders unparalleled enthusiasm to lead us on, the team has responded with an intense focus, unexpected leaders have emerged, camaraderie has risen to an all-time high, the passion and hunger are evident, and it is clear that the Lions know they have some unfinished business.

In their most recent game, the Lions rebounded with a decisive semifinal playoff victory over P.S. 57, and now await their opponent in the championship game.

Working in teams, students brainstormed arguments and prepared speeches. In an assembly for students, staff, and community members. Each team presented their reasons why students should or should not be required to wear uniforms.

The Locke’s Lions were born in February, 2008.

After running several weekend basketball clinics at Alain L. Locke Elementary School – P.S. 208, Coach Greer Love established a great relationship with Ms. Green and Ms. Colon. He approached them with a proposal that would introduce a dual-focused academic and athletic program for kids who had an interest in basketball, modeled after his experience as a tutor for the Indiana University student-athlete services department. The team was selected from over 45 students who tried out this past October.

On days when practic was scheduled, Coach Love assisted as a student teacher in some of the afternoon classes. This helped emphasize the academic component of the program and to give him broader exposure to students who were not on the team. After school, the team heads straight to the cafeteria for mandatory study tables prior to basketball practice. Participants in Locke’s Lions are required to work on homework under Coach Love’s tutelage. If students do not have homework or are finished, they are expected to read a book and write down five unfamiliar words in order to improve their vocabulary. After an hour of study tables, basketball practice commences.

Before competing locally, the team took on the teachers of Alain L. Locke Elementary. The whole school was invited to attend this enormously popular spirit assembly. Not only did these assemblies energize the student body with school spirit and promote further recognition of the program, but they also helped forge more respectful relationships between teachers and students. The teachers showed that experience still trumps youth by winning 26 to 24 in a closely contested game.

Along with seven other area coaches, teachers, and school administrators, Coach Love co-founded a local Harlem league for interscholastic competition.

On Sunday, March 22nd, we participated in UNICEF USA’s Tap Water Walk in New York’s Battery Park.

Our goal: To help raise awareness and support for children worldwide who suffer from a lack of readily available clean water.

We walked one mile to symbolize the distance many people, particularly children have to walk just to get water that may not be drinkable, but is used for bathing and cleaning items. They held water jugs weighing 2lbs to symbolize what it feels like to carry water for long periods of time.

We learned that 4200 children died daily in parts of African and Asia from water related preventable diseases.

On December 3, 2008 the students at Alain L. Locke – P.S. 208 launched Harlem’s first elementary school environmental club.

With the help of an exceptional young “green-preneur” who traveled all the way from Little Rock, Arkansas with a passionate “go green” message . The message was all the more inspiring because the young lady delivering it was not much older than our students.

Twelve-year old Riley Hoffer is the Founder of CG Kidz, a program devoted to fostering green living practices among kids. The program was created as part of the community outreach of eco-friendly bottle maker CynerGreen.com.

Riley shared her eco-friendly principle of the 3 Rs with us: "Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle." Riley also demonstrated that going green can be fun as she taught our students how to craft their own Christmas ornaments and decorations using recycled materials.

By the end of the day, we were not only able to share environmentally-friendly tips with our families at home, with tips like taking briefer showers and avoiding keeping the refrigerator door open for too long. We were were also able to see firsthand the impact that children can have in helping to save the planet.

Aside from our 6th-grade guest of honor and keynote speaker, on hand to mark the event was Evette Zayas, Chief of Staff to New York State Assemblyman Adam Clayton Powell, IV.

<img class="size-large wp-image-39" title="374" src="http://alainllocke.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/374-522x347.jpg" alt="Left to right: Evette Zayas, Chief of Staff, State Assembly ,Adam Clayton Powell IV; Riley Hoffer, founder CGKidz.com; Ms C.
A partnership with Maryland’s first certified eco-friendly elementary school, Gibson Island Country School in Pasadena, Maryland, was also established for mentoring and curriculum materials.

Our own Ms. Christina Adebiyi was presented with Environmental Club in a Box, consisting of mentoring and curriculum materials, by Riley's mom, Danelle Hoffer.

This is the curriculum that set the pace for the events our club participated in during the 2008 — 2009 school year. In addition to taking away the literal earth-changing message of environmental responsibility, each student left Wednesday’s presentation with a “green gift” of a BPA-free stainless steel CG Kidz reusable water bottle.
