Harlem’s Alain L. Locke Elementary School –PS 208 Celebrates Earth Week with Regional Birds of Prey, a New Logo, and Interactive On-Line Presence

Alain L. Locke Elementary School – PS 208, hosted a press conference announcing the school’s Environmental Club’s activities during Earth Week and its newly branded, interactive online platform.

On Thursday, April 23rd, we celebrated Earth Week 2009  with an on-site visit from the Harlem River Ecology Center, , hosted by the center’s founder, Luger Balan.  Our students experienced two of the center’s exciting environmental education programs. In the auditorium, “Urban Wings Over Water”, where students and teachers will be introduced to various birds of our urban wetlands and watershed, including birds of prey.

In the gymnasium, “ Living Dinosaurs of the Urban Estuary”.  Both programs offer a colorful presentation, with audience participation with fun and hands-on environmental investigation and discovery activities. In the morning at its press conference, the school will also unveil a new logo and social marketing platform to help establish  a unique identity for Alain L. Locke P.S 208.

The creation of the school’s environmental club, as well as its new branding and social marketing platform, is a result of the school’s PENCIL Partnership with Kara Smith of Karasma Media PRLeibowitz Communications,  donated their company’s expertise to design the school’s logo and this website.   Leibowitz’ Maxine Gurevich and designer Nehal Beltangady explained their creative process to students.

PENCIL is a nonprofit organization that builds and supports customized relationships between business leaders and principals to inspire innovative solutions to the challenges facing New York City public schools.
